Walgreens gives four ways to check a gift card balance: online at its card portal, by phone, in a store, or on your receipt. The online route is the one most people use, because it works at any hour and needs only the numbers on the card.

In a store or on your receipt
A participating Walgreens or Duane Reade store can read the balance at the register. Your last receipt paid with the card also shows what was left after that purchase.
Why a Walgreens balance can look wrong
A Walgreens balance usually looks wrong because the figure is an estimate, a purchase has not posted yet, or a digit was mistyped. Each has a simple check.
The figure is an estimate
The Walgreens terms say the balance you receive when you ask is an estimate only. Treat it as close, and keep a few dollars of margin when you plan a purchase that uses the whole card.
A purchase has not posted yet
Walgreens says the balance is usually adjusted right after a purchase, but the adjustment can be delayed. If you just paid with the card, check again later before you assume money is missing.
A digit out of place, or the wrong number called
The portal needs both the card number and the PIN. If the card came from an employer batch, the bulk number above may be the one that knows it.
An unclaimed balance sent to the state
Walgreens gift cards do not expire, but the terms say an unused balance may have to be handed to a state agency under abandoned property laws. The card then shows zero, and the state’s unclaimed property department is where you file a claim.
